Combine Perth’s Mediterranean climate and more sunshine than other Australian capitals and you have the perfect incentive to explore, especially on the water.
Perth stretches along the banks of the broad Swan River overlooked by shiny glass towers, many the headquarters of major mining companies. Anytime of the week all manner of boats and sailing craft dot the Swan River. Visitors can get afloat aboard a river cruise from the jetties next to Barrack Square, home to the distinctive Bell Tower spire, head to Perth Zoo or Rottnest Island.
On land, start exploring at King’s Park – Perth’s vast parkland and botanical gardens perched on a plateau overlooking the city and river. It’s a favourite with picnickers and visitors and the city views are spectacular.
Perth’s Cultural Centre is at Northbridge and the precinct includes the Art Gallery of WA, Western Australian Museum, Library and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA). Nearby are the State Theatre Centre and the Heath Ledger Theatre named in honour of Perth’s much-loved actor. Northbridge is Perth’s clubs and dining district making this one of the most colourful and lively parts of the city. There’s more great dining in the city’s laneways with popular cafes and bars.
On Hay Street, the Perth Mint is an imposing sandstone building that includes a museum, gift shop and jeweller. Perth is also home to some of Australia’s great treasures – gold, pearls and Argyle Pink Diamonds. There’s more shopping and dining at Subiaco and Leederville or head to the Burswood complex for a turn at the gaming tables, a round of golf, tennis or to dine.
Perth’s coastline of clear blue waters includes 19 beaches. Cottesloe is the most famous – an appealing seaside enclave with a distinctive surf pavilion and popular beach. Continue north along the Sunset Coast to more beach spots, each a little different in character. At Sorrento Quay explore the shops and dine overlooking the marina.
South of the Swan estuary are more beaches leading to Rockingham where you can swim with dolphins or see them up close on a cruise. Penguin Island is home to colonies of penguins and sea lions, while Rottnest is perfect for a daytrip with beaches and coves to explore and the island’s history to discover. East of the city the Swan Valley’s food and wine trail leads to cellar doors, inviting restaurants, galleries and shops to browse.
