Description

For an alternative to the ferry journey, flights between Perth (Jandakot Airport) and Rottnest are available. Scenic flights around Rottnest and beyond are also offered by the Rottnest Air Taxi service and depart from the Rottnest Aerodrome - call or email for reservations. Rottnest Aerodrome The Rottnest Aerodrome has a sealed runway just under 1,300 metres in length and is used on a daily basis for fixed-wing and helicopter operations. The Rottnest Aerodrome plays an important part in the training of civilian pilots in Western Australia. Trainee pilots often practice circuits, cross-wind landings and take-offs using the Aerodrome. Rottnest can be challenging for trainee pilots of light fixed-wing aircraft due to the strong cross-winds often experienced as the aircraft come in for landing. The Rottnest Aerodrome is also important for training in the use of radio navigation aids. Rottnest has a non-directional beacon (NDB), which pilots use to learn night flying. NDBs are located at every major Airport and many minor airfields around Australia as aids to navigation.
