Fremantle, or ‘Freo’ as this engaging port town is affectionately known, is just 30 minutes from the centre of Perth but wander around its heritage streetscapes lined with late Victorian buildings and you have a sense of being transported to another time.

Freo is acclaimed as the finest example of a 19th Century port town in the world but more than simply heritage, Fremantle has an effervescent ambience that attracts a strong following.

Sunday afternoon and the sun is glistening bright through a cloudless sky and the ‘Fremantle Doctor’ maintains a refreshing breeze. At the covered market the alleyways are filled with shoppers buying fresh fruit, hot food and all manner of goods. A crowd gathers outside, encircling a local busker mid their entertaining routine.

The pavements of the surrounding streets are filled with diners while down around the waterfront fresh fish and seafood is on the menu at the harbourside restaurants and the scene is just as busy at Little Creatures brewery pub. In the fun park opposite, families are soaking up the sun and watching the red Ferris wheel.

Come 1.00 pm and the firing of the cannon cracks through the air from the turrets of the Round House as smoke drifts into the sky. From here you can see the passage of pleasure craft – sail and motor launches – making their way through the estuary. They pass the dramatic shape of Fremantle’s Maritime Museum that houses some of WA’s nautical heritage from pearl luggers to the 1983 America Cup’s winner – Australia II – now behind glass but facing into the breeze.

Discover Fremantle’s charisma as you explore its appealing streets, its galleries and dining spots – all just a short drive from Perth or come for a weekend.
