Horizontal Falls
The Horizontal Falls is one of the hero experiences of the Kimberley’s. Caused by the extremely large tides that occur in the Kimberley Region passing through narrow gorges, creating the falls. David Attenborough described the Horizontal Falls as "one of the greatest natural wonders of the world”.
The Horizontal Falls, located in the Buccaneer Archipelago, is made up of 2 gorges one that is 20m wide and the other is only 10m wide. As the tide ebbs and flows, water builds up in the bays on either side of the gorges.
The falls are caused by the large tides in the Kimberley’s – at times up to 10m difference between high and low tides – and the water building up on one side of the gorge fast than it can travel through the gap. The fast flow of water through the gorge creates a ‘waterfall’ that can be up to 4m in height difference on either side.
During the highest tidal differences, there can be more than 1 Million Litres of water passing through the gap every second.
Here is what you can expect from a day trip to the Horizontal Falls from Broome.
