The route, day by day

Day 1: Perth to Hopetoun. A 6:00am pickup, then breakfast and a walk in York, a stop in Corrigin, and a visit to Wave Rock at Hyden. After a stop in Ravensthorpe, the group arrives for dinner and camp at Four Mile Campground in Fitzgerald River National Park.

Day 2: Hopetoun to Esperance. An early hike up East Mount Barren in Fitzgerald River National Park, then the drive to Esperance for a swim at Twilight Cove and lunch in town. In the afternoon, Dabungool Cultural Experiences leads an Indigenous tour in Esperance, and the day ends with dinner and camp at Lucky Bay Campground in Cape Le Grand National Park.

Day 3: Esperance. Sunrise at Lucky Bay, then a hike up Frenchmans Peak. After a swim and lunch at Hellfire Bay, there's more hiking and swimming along the Thistle Cove trail before heading back to Lucky Bay Campground for the night.

Day 4: Esperance to Bremer Bay. Another Lucky Bay sunrise, then breakfast and time to explore Esperance and lunch in Ravensthorpe. The group swims at Bremer Bay, takes a wildflower walk and then has dinner and camp at Tozers Bush Camp.

Day 5: Bremer Bay to Margaret River. An early start from Tozers, coffee and time to explore in Albany, then lunch in Denmark. The group swims at Green Pools and Elephant Rocks, visits the Bicentennial Tree in Pemberton and settles in for dinner and camp at Hamelin Bay Caravan Park.

Day 6: Margaret River to Perth. Sunrise at Hamelin Bay, then breakfast and the markets in Margaret River town. Lunch comes with a beer and wine tasting at a local brewery and winery, followed by Busselton Jetty and foreshore and a visit to Otto's Chocolate Factory, before the drive back to Perth.

Getting to the pickup point

Pickup and drop-off are at the Tourist Bus Stop in Northbridge. Most of our group walked, caught public transport or took an Uber or taxi to get there.

Highlights from the road

Swimming in Esperance. The water in Esperance is a stunning blue, and swimming at the different beaches of Cape Le Grand National Park was a favourite.

Group dinners. The dinners were delicious, with a great variety of food, and dietary requirements were catered for.

Adventure, start to finish. You hike some of the best trails and swim at some of the best beaches in the south of the state.

Great company. The tour is a great way to meet other travellers, and our whole group got along well.

Guides who do it all. The guides know WA and Australia well, and they drive, hike, cook and guide you.

Local characters. Tozer, who owns one of the campgrounds, lives off the grid and loves wildflowers.

Before you book: what to expect

This is a back-to-basics adventure rather than a luxury holiday, so it helps to know what to expect:

  • Camping is in swags, with minimal power and toilets at some stops, and everyone helps with cooking and cleaning
  • All campsites have showers, of varying niceness
  • The hikes are graded 5 (hard), so reasonable fitness is needed
  • Distances are big, so there are some long days on the bus
  • Space for luggage is limited, as bags and swags travel in the trailer
  • Guests over 75, and those with certain medical issues, will need to complete a medical form
  • The campsites are popular and often booked out, and during school holidays and long weekends the team makes sure the group always has somewhere to camp and can still visit the best attractions

Meet travellers from all around the world!

In a nutshell

It is one of the few tours that explores this part of the state, and it delivers a real Aussie camping adventure with great food, great scenery and a friendly group. If you want a unique way to see WA and don't mind sleeping in a swag, this one is hard to beat.
