Western Australia is the country’s largest State, representing a third of Australia’s land area. When you realise that over half of that expanse falls within just one region – WA’s Golden Outback – you begin to get a sense of scale of just how vast this huge slice of Western Australia is and of course, how much there is to discover.

Stretching from the South Australia border across the Nullarbor Plain it takes in the southeastern coastline and encompasses the Western Australian Wheatbelt to the east of Perth and the fields of wildflowers that WA is famous for, and reaches to just south of the Tropic of Capricorn.

The Wheatbelt region is a chance to discover character townships, quirky attractions, charming farm stays and great outback self-drive road trips. Just 340km southeast of Perth is one of the region’s highlights – Wave Rock – towering 15m high and stretching for 100m it was formed 2.7 billion years ago and is one of Australia’s iconic natural sites. From Wave Rock, make it a road trip to the coastal town of Esperance with its striking white sands and blue waters. To the east of the town, visit Cape Le Grand National Park to see kangaroos lazing on Lucky Bay or explore the beautiful beaches spotted along the Great Ocean Drive to the west of town.

Kalgoorlie, in Australia’s Golden Outback, is home to one of the world’s largest open-cut gold mines. The gold rush that began here in the 1890s was a major catalyst for the growth of WA and the town retains some of its grand buildings of the gold rush era. If you are a keen golfer then you have come to the right place. The world’s longest golf course – the Nullarbor Links – lies along the Eyre Highway, stretching for a staggering 1,365km from Kalgoorlie to Ceduna.

Take a journey through the Gascoyne Murchison region north of Perth to see miles of rich red earth, rugged rock formations, and enchanting station stays dotted throughout the region. It’s also home to Mount Augustus – the world’s largest monocline.

Western Australia’s Golden Outback is both colourful and surprising.
